On April 9, 1945, one day before the liberation, 3 young men were executed in this forest. The bodies of Albert Eggen, Sybrand Jan van der Linde and Johan Dhont were found 2 days later. Eggen was taken away by German soldiers who were looking for his older brother, who was also called Albert. The older one was in the resistance and was one of those who removed a roadblock by the Germans, to give advancing allied troops free passage. The youngest Albert, also called 'Broer', was hiding with his parents to escape the Arbeidseinsatz, or labor deployment. When the Germans came, he could no longer get away. Dhont was an electrician in labor camp Ten Arlo between Hoogeveen and Zuidwolde. He was dissatisfied with the wage payment and became insolent and rebellious. On April 7, he told the Germans they should leave quickly. Thereupon he was imprisoned. It was the fleeing Austrian judge Behringer who ordered the execution of the three young men.
