The last private owners, since 1895 the Passmann family (Hermann Paßmann), were a German entrepreneurial family. The timber merchant and industrial magnate, Kommerzienrat Arnold Passmann from Duisburg-Ruhrort, had acquired the estate at an auction. The members of this family are buried in the private cemetery behind the parking lot. After the war, all German possessions were confiscated, and thus the castle and the buildings within the outer moat passed into the possession of the Dutch state.

De Zumpe is a small but beautiful nature reserve of 120 hectares east of Doetinchem, nestled between the river dunes of the Wrange and the Slangenburg. De Zumpe is a unique nature reserve with a very diverse flora and fauna. There are beautiful hiking trails, which can, however, become muddy after rainfall. Along the way, you will pass ponds, small woodlands, and hedges, among other things. It is definitely worth a visit.
