Zaltbommel, Hanseatic city since 2021: In 1874, Zaltbommel makes a formal attempt and officially applies for admission. For five years, contributions are diligently paid. But in 1877, a cold shower follows: admission is refused. The exact reason has never become entirely clear. It must have been a bitter disappointment for a city that felt so emphatically related to the Hanseatic tradition. Yet, Zaltbommel does not let itself be discouraged. The city cherishes its Hanseatic past and keeps it alive in its streetscape and traditions. And then, in 2021, the long-awaited recognition comes: Zaltbommel is officially admitted to the register of Hanseatic cities. The city meets all criteria: the Hanseatic DNA is in the city's genes, the historical setting has been impressively well-preserved, there is active interpretation, and there is dynamism. Unfortunately, I had to cover a few more kilometers on the day I passed through Oud Woudrichem. I would have liked to invest more time exploring this great fortress town and its historic harbor... Anyone passing through here should plan for at least 2-3 hours to stay.

This battery—a kind of fort—is part of the New Dutch Waterline. A battery is a small, fortified defensive structure that forms part of a waterline. The site of the battery covers a total of five hectares. A barracks dating from around 1880, which served as a shelter during wars, is also located here.
