On June 16, 1944, the Canadian bomber takes off from the English airfield Croft. This is on its way for a bombing raid on the heavily defended Fischer Tropsch synthetic petrol factory near Sterkrade/Holten (Essen) in Germany. 4 Heinkels patrol above the south of the Netherlands. The Halifax is intercepted and shot down by a German Heinkel and crashes here on the Nederheide in Schijf.
