Waiting for the Lock Near Steenbergen lies the restored Benedensas lock complex. Since 1824, the locks protected the land behind it from high water from the Volkerak. They also bridged the height difference for shipping. The lock is called Benedensas because it lies on the lower reaches of the Vliet, unlike—indeed—the Bovensas. Rugged skippers would enjoy a drink in the café until they could pass through the lock. This is how it is told in the regional novels about the little boy Merijntje Gijzen. The Merijntje Gijzen walking route, right through Benedensas, takes you back to that time.

The footbridge over the lock is out of order. So unfortunately you can't go from the parking lot to the nature reserve at the Volkerak. It is not known how long this will take. Edze Veldman

Don't be misled by the - at first sight - private character: it is indeed private property, but walking through it is allowed. The view is great, but keep in mind that the wind always has free play in this open landscape...
