The ecopassage is actually a polder. Up to 12 m deep there are bentonite (clay) bulkheads around it. Together with a pumping station this ensures that the ecopassage is not full of water and therefore remains passable. So-called whisper joints have been incorporated in the viaduct to limit noise under the viaduct.
