An enjoyable 4km walking track leads you around the serene Lough Fea in the eastern Sperrins in Northern Ireland. The scenery is mountainous and panoramic, and the calm waters bring many anglers and are home to a number of fascinating bird species, often seen flitting along the lake. The walk is lovely and flat and features a children's play area, toilets, and plenty of rain shelters in case of unpredictable weather.

On the way back, after Point 4, there is a large segment over private land. No access allowed. On the way back, the route goes over private land where walking is not allowed. We were turned back by the landowner and were not allowed to continue on his property (from point 4 to 5 on the route)! We had to walk about 6 km extra to get to the starting point (A)!

Frequently Asked Questions

Are there any easy, family-friendly hikes near Tullylinkisay?

Yes, the area offers several gentle options perfect for families. For a peaceful and scenic experience, the 2.6-mile loop around Lough Fea is ideal. Another great choice is the walk at Ballymaguigan Nature Reserve, which features a flat path leading to a sandy beach and a bird hide on the shore of Lough Neagh, making it engaging for children.

What is the terrain like on the trails around Tullylinkisay?

The terrain is quite varied. You'll find everything from shaded forest paths in places like Iniscarn Forest to open, boggy uplands in the higher Sperrin Mountains. Some routes, like the Carntogher Way, can be very wet underfoot, so waterproof hiking boots are strongly recommended. Always check the route details before you set out.

Are there any circular walks in the area?

Yes, many of the best hikes are loops. For a moderately challenging circular route with great views, consider the Slieve Gallion NE Top Summit loop from Moneymore. This trail is just under 8 km and offers a rewarding walk with a steady climb.

Can I bring my dog on the hiking trails?

Dogs are welcome on many trails in the region, especially in open areas like the Sperrin Mountains and public forests. However, you will likely be walking through areas with livestock, so it's essential to keep your dog on a lead at all times. Always check for specific signage at trailheads, as restrictions can apply, particularly during bird nesting season.

Are there any hikes with waterfalls near Tullylinkisay?

Yes, you can find some beautiful waterfalls. Ness Country Park is a highlight, featuring a stunning waterfall within its steep, wooded glen and over 7km of riverside paths. The Carntogher Way trail also takes you past the lovely Altkeeran Waterfall.

What are the parking options for the main hiking areas?

Most of the popular trailheads and parks, such as Iniscarn Forest, Lough Fea, and Ness Country Park, have designated car parks. These can get busy, especially on weekends with good weather, so arriving earlier in the day is a good idea. For hikes starting from more remote points, parking is often limited to small lay-bys on the roadside.

What do other hikers think of the trails around Tullylinkisay?

What is the best time of year to hike around Tullylinkisay?

You can hike here year-round, but late spring through early autumn (May to September) generally offers the best conditions with longer daylight hours and milder weather. The hills can be particularly beautiful in late summer when the heather is in bloom. Be prepared for rain and boggy ground at any time of year.

Are the trails suitable for trail running?

Many of the forest tracks and open mountain paths are excellent for trail running. Routes through Iniscarn Forest offer a mix of surfaces, while the trails on Slieve Gallion provide a fantastic challenge for runners looking for elevation. Be mindful that some upland paths can be very boggy and technical.

How can I get to the trailheads using public transport?

Accessing the main trailheads directly by public transport can be challenging as many are in rural locations. Bus services connect to nearby towns like Magherafelt and Maghera, but you will likely need to arrange a taxi for the final leg to starting points like Iniscarn Forest or Lough Fea. It's best to plan your transport in advance.

Are there any other outdoor activities available in the area besides hiking?

Yes, the region is a hub for outdoor adventure. The Sperrin Mountains offer opportunities for mountain biking, and centers like The Jungle NI provide activities such as ziplining and high-wire courses. For more information on the range of activities available, you can explore the local tourism resources.
