An enjoyable 4km walking track leads you around the serene Lough Fea in the eastern Sperrins in Northern Ireland. The scenery is mountainous and panoramic, and the calm waters bring many anglers and are home to a number of fascinating bird species, often seen flitting along the lake. The walk is lovely and flat and features a children's play area, toilets, and plenty of rain shelters in case of unpredictable weather.

On the way back, after Point 4, there is a large segment over private land. No access allowed. On the way back, the route goes over private land where walking is not allowed. We were turned back by the landowner and were not allowed to continue on his property (from point 4 to 5 on the route)! We had to walk about 6 km extra to get to the starting point (A)!

Yes, the region offers several easier walks suitable for families. While many trails involve ascents, you can find gentler paths in places like the highly-regarded Drumnaph Nature Reserve, which offers a rich tapestry of natural habitats. Iniscarn Forest & Park is another popular choice for a pleasant woodland walk, though some paths have a slight incline.
Dogs are generally welcome on the trails, but they should be kept on a lead, especially on open moorland or near livestock. The forest paths and nature reserves are great for walks with dogs. Always be prepared to clean up after your pet to help keep the area beautiful.
Trail conditions vary. You'll find well-maintained forest tracks within places like Iniscarn Forest, but on the open hillsides and summits, paths can be uneven, boggy, and exposed to the elements. Sturdy, waterproof hiking boots are strongly recommended for most routes in the Sperrins.
Yes, there are several circular routes. A good moderate option is the Slieve Gallion NE top loop via Iniscarn Forest β Ring of Gullion, which takes you through woodland and up to the summit before returning. Many walks in local parks and reserves, such as the trail around Loughmacrory, are also loops.
The landscape is defined by the rolling hills of the Sperrin Mountains. Hikes often reward you with expansive views across the countryside from summits like Slieve Gallion and Carntogher. You'll also experience beautiful ancient woodlands in nature reserves and forests throughout the region.
There are a handful of curated routes available on komoot for the immediate Rosgarran area, covering a range of difficulties. The wider Sperrins region contains a much larger network of trails to explore, from short nature walks to challenging long-distance paths.
Yes, for experienced hikers looking for a challenge, the Slieve Gallion Memorial Path and Lough Fea β Sperrins is a difficult trail over 20 miles (33 km) long. It involves significant elevation gain and requires a full day, good fitness, and navigation skills.
The area is highly rated by the komoot community. Hikers often praise the mix of scenery, from the peaceful forest paths to the wide-open views from the hilltops. The sense of remoteness and the opportunity to climb prominent peaks like Slieve Gallion are frequently mentioned highlights.
Most formal trailheads and nature reserves have designated parking areas. For example, to climb Carntogher, there is a small car park on the Tirkane Road. Iniscarn Forest also has parking available. For less formal routes, parking may be limited to roadside verges, so please park considerately and do not block access.
For those new to hiking, starting in a managed area is a great idea. Drumnaph Nature Reserve and Banagher Glen Forest Park offer well-defined paths with options for shorter walks. These allow you to experience the local scenery without committing to a strenuous mountain ascent.
Reaching the main trailheads, especially for mountain routes in the Sperrins, can be difficult without a car. Public transport is limited in these rural areas. It's best to plan your journey in advance and consider using a taxi from a nearby town like Magherafelt if you are relying on public transport.
