As far as is known, Mecklar was first mentioned in documents in 1252.[2] Mecklar has always been closely connected to the river Fulda, which divides the village into an old and a new part. There used to be a ford at about the height of the stone Fulda bridge, which was built in 1899. There is documentary evidence of shipping traffic from Bremen on the Weser and Fulda to Hersfeld via Mecklar.
