Tips from the Community

Michael (Wasi)
August 19, 2025, Baldinger Tor (Nördlingen City Gate)

The Baldinger Tor in Nördlingen is one of the five historical city gates and was first mentioned in 1376. It secured the road towards Würzburg and Frankfurt am Main and was part of the medieval city fortifications. The barbican was completed in 1406 by Master Wenzeslaus, and in 1430 a reconstruction took place under the direction of stonemason Conrad Stenglin. Originally, the gate structure resembled the Berger Tor: a rectangular main gate building with an almost square barbican. The tower was five stories high and had a round superstructure with a gun embrasure and a tent roof. During the Thirty Years' War, the gate was damaged, and in 1703 the tower unexpectedly collapsed – presumably due to insufficient repairs. Five people lost their lives.

The city wall of Nördlingen is a true gem of medieval architecture and a highlight for visitors of all ages. It is the only completely preserved and fully accessible city wall in Germany. Stretching approximately 2.6 to 2.7 kilometers, it encircles the entire old town and features a covered walkway that can be traversed along its entire length. The wall originally dates back to 1327, when Emperor Louis the Bavarian ordered its construction to defend the city. Over the centuries, it was expanded and reinforced several times, including the addition of five city gates, twelve towers, bastions, and bakehouse towers for close-range defense.

The gate looks a bit desolate from the outside. Inside, the buildings and colors give it a more charming appearance. A small artists' park has been built outside.

The Baldinger Gate looks a bit crippled compared to the other gates, which is because the tower has collapsed. 🤷‍♂️

Nördlingen is surrounded by Germany's only completely preserved and fully accessible city wall. A walk on the 2.7-kilometer-long defense system offers a wonderful view of the medieval streets. If you climb the "Daniel" - the bell tower of the late Gothic St. George's Church - you have a wonderful panoramic view of the city and the Ries, a meteorite crater that was formed about 14.5 million years ago. To this day, the tower keeper on the "Daniel" calls out his watchman's call "So G’sell so" over the city throughout the year.
