Until 1789, Ellingen was the residence of the Land Commander of the Franconian Bailiwick of the Teutonic Order. The present palace complex, built from 1708 to around 1760, was preceded by several medieval buildings and a Renaissance structure. The current main building was constructed between 1717 and 1721 by the architect Franz Keller, based on plans by Wilhelm Heinrich Behringer under the direction of Karl Heinrich von Hornstein.

The ideal view of a baroque garden in Ellingen is shown for the first time in a coat of arms calendar view from 1726. In the 19th century, the garden of the Ellingen residence was landscaped. This included the comprehensive classicist renovation of a garden pavilion bordering the baroque palace garden to the north. It was partially destroyed in the Second World War and demolished in 1945. The town hall of the town of Ellingen in the Middle Franconian district of Weißenburg-Gunzenhausen is located in the town center at the intersection of Weißenburger Straße and Schlossstraße. The building with the address Weißenburger Straße 1 is registered as an architectural monument in the Bavarian monument list under the monument number D-5-77-125-111.[1] The late baroque building was built between 1744 and 1747 by the Teutonic Order according to plans by Franz Joseph Roth, a plasterer and master builder. It originally contained the high court administration of the Ellingen Land Commandery. It also contained a pharmacy, a meeting room, offices, a citizens' room and a prison. In 1794, renovations were carried out according to plans by Balthasar Gaab. An interior renovation took place between 1860 and 1861.[1][2] The two-story mansard roof building is made of sandstone and has a bell tower on the roof. A pillory stood at the southwest corner of the building. The building has a central projection and a front staircase on the south side. The Rococo statues on the facade are by Friedrich Maucher and Johann Peter Wagner. Ceiling paintings, wall panelling, floors and, above all, the stucco work by Franz Joseph Roth have been preserved from the interior. The colonnade in the inner courtyard is part of the renovations by the French architect Michel d'Ixnard and was rebuilt around 1775.
