Belfast Castle sits at the foot of Cave Hill and is one of the most iconic locations to view the stunning skyline of Belfast City Built in the 1860s, the estate remains a perfect location for locals and tourists to explore the surrounding natural woodland, parkland and gardens. It’s also home to the Cave Hill Adventurous Playground, archaeological sites, a visitor information centre, eco trails and orienteering routes. It also contains both parkland and mature mixed woodland and is home to many different species of wildlife, including long-eared owls, sparrowhawks and Belfast’s rarest plant, the town hall clock.

These beautiful ancient cave formations in Cave Hill Country Park lay inside the largest and highest granite outcrops in the region. The caves are home to indigenous cave paintings that tell the Dreamtime creation story of the Seven Sisters. The route bypasses the cave however, if you have time, it's definitely worth stepping inside and exploring.

Absolutely. The area is excellent for loop trails. A great example is the Belfast Castle – Cave Hill loop from Belfast Castle, which combines a parkland setting with a rewarding climb. Many of the trails on both Cave Hill and Carnmoney Hill are designed as circular routes.
For some of the most impressive panoramic views, head to Cave Hill. The trails here offer wide-ranging vistas over Belfast city, the lough, and the coastline. Carnmoney Hill is another top choice, providing breathtaking views from its summit, Dunanney Rath.
Many trails in the area are suitable for walking with a dog, but they should be kept on a lead, especially in areas with livestock or protected wildlife like Carnmoney Hill. Rea's Wood is a popular spot for dog walkers, but be aware you'll need to carry out any waste as bins are not provided on the trail.
Yes, there are plenty of options for families. The lower paths of Carnmoney Hill offer gentle walks through woodland. The New Mossley Woodland Walk is another good choice, providing a straightforward linear path through a regenerated urban woodland that's great for spotting local wildlife.
Parking is available at major trailheads like Cave Hill Country Park and Belfast Castle. However, popular spots such as the car park for Divis and the Black Mountain can fill up very quickly, especially on weekends, so it's best to arrive early.
Cave Hill offers trails for different fitness levels. While there are gentle paths within the country park, the main summit trails are considered moderately challenging. They involve a significant, steep climb to reach the top but reward you with fantastic views.
Yes, many of the main hiking areas are accessible from Glengormley via public transport. Bus services run from the town centre towards Belfast, providing access to the trailheads for Cave Hill Country Park and Belfast Castle Estate. It's always a good idea to check the latest bus timetables before you travel.
While there are no specific 'pub walk' trails, many routes start or finish near areas with good amenities. After a hike in Cave Hill Country Park or around Belfast Castle, you'll find several pubs and cafes in the surrounding neighbourhoods where you can relax and get something to eat or drink.
It's highly recommended to wear shoes with good grip and traction. Many paths, such as those on Carnmoney Hill, can be grassy, uneven, and muddy, especially after rain. Sturdy hiking shoes or boots will provide the best support and safety.
Yes, the area is rich in history. On Carnmoney Hill, you can explore Dunanney Rath, an archaeological site dating back to around 500 BC. Cave Hill is also home to several caves and McArt's Fort, another ancient ringfort.
