July 5, 2025, Himmelstadt Lock

The Main Lock in Himmelstadt is one of 37 locks on the 400 km long, fully canalized stretch of the Main River between Mainz and Bamberg. It was built between 1935 and 1937 and opened in 1940. The lock chamber holds 17,000 m³ of water and is 300 m long and 12 m wide. In approximately 10 minutes, ships overcome a water level difference of up to 4.3 meters. Three ships with a gross tonnage of over 1,000 can be locked through simultaneously. Source: https://himmelstadt.de/leben-erleben/freizeit-tourismus/sehenswertes/schleuse/

Karlstadt is the district seat of the Lower Franconian district of Main-Spessart and is located approximately 30 kilometers north of Würzburg in the Main Franconian wine-growing region. The first mention of Karlburg in 742 is directly related to the founding of the Diocese of Würzburg. Around 1202, the settlement of Karlstadt, located near Karlburg, was founded by Bishop Konrad von Querfurt. The exact founding date is unknown. The earliest evidence of the town seal dates back to 1277. Source: Wikipedia

Maria im Grünen Tal, one of the oldest pilgrimage churches (14th century) in the Diocese of Würzburg with a smiling Madonna of Grace in the chancel. The building, which today serves as the chancel, probably once represented the entire chapel. In 1622, a nave was added. Significant structural changes occurred in 1968/1969: after the old nave collapsed during a thunderstorm night, it was rebuilt to double its size, laying the foundation for a revival of the Retzbach pilgrimage, which is now one of the most vibrant in the diocese. The charm of the Retzbach pilgrimage church is probably also due to the unique location of the place: "The embedding in nature. In addition, there is the special atmosphere in the pilgrimage church, which breathes generosity and conveys a sense of security at the same time. All this culminates in the miraculous image of the smiling Mother of God: "This smile is particularly beautiful when it is illuminated by the sun towards evening," says Monsignor Postler. "A smile that radiates joy and confidence!" This is precisely what the passionate pastor wants to give people – "hope, comfort, and strength for everyday life." Because: "We humans need places of comfort like Maria im Grünen Tal!" Behind the church, a cool, shaded Stations of the Cross leads up the mountain through the forest. The path was consecrated in 1880 and consists of 14 Stations of the Cross in Gothic style made of sandstone. Finally, idyllically located behind the pilgrimage church is the Marienbrünnchen, whose water is said to have healing properties. /www.fraenkisches-weinland.de/poi/wallfahrtskirche_maria_im_grue-15930/
