Wonderfully expansive forest and the lovely Glenwhirry river as a bonus. Apparently this place is well known for having been haunted by an ancient apparition! Always the same four Druids appear. To observe, then vanish.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are there any family-friendly or easy hikes near Ballylagan?

Yes, the area is well-suited for families and beginners. The Ballylagan Organic Farm itself has two short, self-guided trails (1km and 1.5km) that are perfect for a gentle walk with children. For a slightly longer but still accessible option, the Woodburn Forest loop from Slievetrue is an easy 6.6 km route on forest paths.

Can I bring my dog on the trails around Ballylagan?

Many of the forest and park trails in the County Antrim area are suitable for walking with dogs, but they should generally be kept on a lead, especially near farmland or wildlife. Always check local signage at trailheads for specific rules. Trails in public forests like Woodburn and Ballyboley are popular choices for dog walkers.

Where can I find hikes with good views?

For panoramic views, a short drive to Divis and the Black Mountain is highly recommended by locals. The trails there offer spectacular vistas over Belfast and the surrounding landscape on a clear day. The area is managed by the National Trust and features well-maintained paths through a wildlife-rich landscape.

Are there many circular walks available?

Yes, circular routes are very common in the area, allowing you to start and end at the same point without retracing your steps. Many of the most popular trails are loops, including the moderate Ballyboley Forest loop from Ballynure, which takes you on a circuit through scenic woodland.

What are the trail conditions like in winter?

Forest paths and rural tracks around Ballylagan can become quite muddy and slippery during winter and after heavy rain. It's essential to wear waterproof hiking boots with good grip. The trails are generally accessible year-round, but be prepared for wet conditions.

Is there a place to get a coffee or a bite to eat after a hike?

While there are no pubs directly on the rural hiking trails, the nearby towns of Ballyclare and Belfast offer numerous options. If you venture to the popular Black Mountain for a walk, there is a well-regarded coffee shop on-site which is a great place to relax afterwards.

What should I pack for a day hike in this area?

For a day hike around Ballylagan, it's wise to pack waterproof clothing regardless of the forecast, as the weather can change quickly. Sturdy, comfortable hiking boots are a must, especially for the forest trails. Also bring water, some snacks, and a fully charged phone with a navigation app like komoot.

Where is the best place to park for hiking?

Parking availability varies by trailhead. For hikes in Woodburn Forest, there are designated car parks. For popular spots like Divis and the Black Mountain, the car park can fill up quickly, so arriving early is recommended. Some smaller trailheads, like those for Cregagh Glen, may have very limited or no dedicated parking, requiring you to park responsibly in the vicinity.

How can I get to the trailheads using public transport?

Accessing trailheads directly by public transport can be challenging as many are in rural locations. The most accessible options are often those closer to Belfast, such as Cave Hill Country Park. For most trails around Ballylagan, like those in Woodburn or Ballyboley forests, travelling by car is the most practical option.

Are there any hikes with waterfalls nearby?

While the immediate Ballylagan area is known more for its forests and hills, it serves as an excellent base for exploring the Antrim Coast and Glens. A drive to Glenariff Forest Park will reward you with the spectacular Glenariff Waterfalls, which has a dedicated walking trail along a scenic gorge.

What do other hikers think of the trails around Ballylagan?

The trails are highly rated by the komoot community, with an average score of 4.5 stars. Hikers often praise the region for its quiet woodlands, well-maintained reservoir paths, and the variety of easy to moderate routes available.

Are there any particularly quiet or less-trafficked trails?

For a quieter experience, consider exploring some of the less-common routes. The Forest Dirt Bike Trail loop from North Woodburn Reservoir is a shorter, easy walk that tends to be less busy than the main reservoir loops. Exploring the wider network within Belvoir Park Forest can also lead you to more peaceful sections away from the main paths.
