About the closest to a via ferrata you will find in Ireland. Slightly adventurous path for those not used to it at all, but from a sportive perspective rather boring for mountaineers. The landscape and views are great though and still worth it. Downside is that you need to go for a guided tour here.

Islandmagee is steeped in history and features rolling hills, quiet villages and a dramatic coastline. Its great cycling, for such a small wee Island it packs a punch, with vistas at every turn. You can walk the spectacular limestone cliffs of the Gobbins or stroll along the sandy beach at Brown’s Bay. Spot seals and seabirds by the harbour of Portmuck. And take in the views across the Irish Sea at Skernaghan, Islandmagee’s northernmost point.

Carved from the rock. Steeped in history. Teeming with wildlife. The Gobbins Cliff Path in a unique and dreamlike experience, its primal beauty tamed by Edwardian engineering. Step through a portal in the rock and onto a pathway over the sea. Peer into the ever-changing waters of the North Passage from the railings of a tubular bridge. Venture between outcrops and across the mouths of yawning caves.

Yes, the area is great for families. For a shorter walk with lots to do, the Carnfunnock Country Park loop is an excellent choice. It's a gentle walk through parkland. For a coastal experience, Brown's Bay offers a 600-meter sandy beach that is ideal for a leisurely stroll with children.
Dogs are welcome on many of the public paths and in parks in the region, provided they are kept on a lead, especially near farmland and wildlife. However, please be aware that the famous Gobbins cliff path is a guided tour and does not permit dogs for safety reasons.
The Gobbins is a spectacular and historic cliff-face path featuring bridges and tunnels along the basalt cliffs. It is not a trail you can hike freely. Access is by guided tour only, which must be booked in advance. The tour provides insights into the area's unique geology and wildlife. A nearby alternative for a self-guided coastal walk is The Gobbins Entrance Gate – The Tubular Bridge loop from Islandmagee.
Yes, there are several circular routes. A popular option that combines coastal scenery with a visit to a historic landmark is the Blackhead Lighthouse loop from Ballycarry. Another great circular walk is the Islandmagee - Ulster Scots Walk which starts from Portmuck harbour and offers fantastic views.
The coastline around the Islandmagee peninsula is a haven for wildlife. Birdwatchers can spot a variety of seabirds, including kittiwakes, guillemots, and razorbills, particularly around the Isle of Muck wildlife sanctuary. It's also common to see seals, and if you're lucky, you might even spot dolphins or porpoises in the Irish Sea.
For dramatic cliffside scenery, the coastal paths along the Gobbins cliffs are unparalleled. The walk to Blackhead Lighthouse also provides rewarding coastal views. For expansive vistas across the Irish Sea towards Scotland, head to the headland on the trail starting from Portmuck harbour or visit Skernaghan, the peninsula's northernmost point.
The weather on the Antrim coast can change quickly. It's essential to wear sturdy, waterproof hiking boots as trails can be uneven and muddy. Layering is key, so include a waterproof and windproof jacket. Even on a clear day, coastal winds can make it feel chilly.
Yes, parking is available at several key locations. There is dedicated parking at The Gobbins Visitor Centre, Carnfunnock Country Park, and Brown's Bay. You can also find parking in villages like Ballycarry or at Portmuck harbour, which serve as start points for various walks.
Most of the main trails, such as those within Carnfunnock Country Park and the paths to key attractions like Blackhead Lighthouse, are generally well-signposted. However, for some of the more rural or less-trafficked coastal paths, it's always a good idea to use a navigation app like komoot to follow your route.
The area is highly regarded by the komoot community, with an average rating of 4.8 stars. Hikers frequently praise the stunning and dramatic coastal scenery, the mix of challenging cliff walks and gentle parkland trails, and the abundance of wildlife.
Absolutely. The best spot for a beach walk is Brown's Bay, a beautiful horseshoe-shaped bay with a 600-meter stretch of sand. It's perfect for a gentle walk, and is also popular for swimming and windsurfing. The small beach at Portmuck harbour is another charming spot for a shorter stroll by the water.
