A great ride through the RSPB area but be aware there is only one main route north/south that bikes are permitted. Brilliant area with cafe for a coffee and cake recharge!

The Lodge is a nature reserve managed by the RSPB. It's the largest stretch of heathland in Bedfordshire. Important species that can be seen here include Hobbies, Nightjars, Ravens, Common Lizards and Natterjack Toads. There are also areas of grassland and woods, important habitat for other species. Where is the best place to park for walks around Eyeworth Pond?

The main starting point for many walks is the car park at Eyeworth Pond, located near the village of Fritham. This provides direct access to the paths around the pond and trails leading into Eyeworth Wood and the surrounding heathland. It's a popular spot, so arriving early is a good idea, especially on weekends.

Are there any family-friendly walks in the Eyeworth area?

Yes, the area around Eyeworth Pond is ideal for families. The gravel paths encircling the pond are relatively flat and accessible, making for a gentle stroll. For an easy but slightly longer option, consider the The White Hart – Jordans Mill loop from Biggleswade, which offers a pleasant walk with minimal elevation.

Can I bring my dog on hikes around Eyeworth?

Eyeworth is a great destination for dog walking. The open heathlands and woodland trails offer plenty of space for dogs to explore. However, be aware that New Forest ponies, cattle, and deer roam freely. It's essential to keep your dog under control, especially during ground-nesting bird season (March to July). After your walk, the Royal Oak pub in nearby Fritham is known to be dog-friendly.

What kind of scenery can I expect on a walk around Eyeworth?

Walks in Eyeworth offer a classic New Forest experience. You'll encounter the serene, lily-covered Eyeworth Pond, wander through ancient woodlands like Eyeworth Wood with its impressive oak trees, and cross open heathlands that turn a vibrant purple with heather in late summer. You are also very likely to see free-roaming New Forest ponies and cattle.

Are there any circular walks available?

The area is well-suited for circular hikes. Many routes start and end at the Eyeworth Pond or Fritham car parks. These loops vary in length, allowing you to combine highlights like Eyeworth Pond, the ancient trees of Eyeworth Wood, and the open views from Longcross Plain into a single walk without retracing your steps.

How many hiking trails are there around Eyeworth?

For a longer, more challenging day out, you could tackle a route like the Wooden Chairs Rest Area – Jordans Mill loop from Biggleswade. Alternatively, you can create a longer loop by linking trails to include Pipers Wait, the highest point in the New Forest, for rewarding panoramic views.

However, trails leading further into the woods or onto the heathland can be uneven, muddy, and narrow, and are not recommended for pushchairs or wheelchairs.

Is there a good pub for a meal or drink after a hike?

Yes, the Royal Oak in the nearby village of Fritham is a very popular choice for post-hike refreshments. It's a traditional pub that is highly regarded for its food and atmosphere, making it the perfect place to relax after exploring the surrounding trails.
