The Grand Western Canal ran between Taunton and Tiverton, this last remaining section is 11 miles long and forms part of NCR 3. It's a shared path, which is busier around the villages of Sampford Peverel and Halberton and of course towards the town of Tiverton, where there are still horse drawn boats operating 🐴 . Cyclists are asked to dismount at some of the narrower bridges. It's incredibly beautiful and peaceful, which makes this an amazing cycling experience. The surface is good but unpaved (small stones/gravel), possible on any bike, although wider tyres such as 28c and upwards would help with comfort.

Meandering 11 miles (22km) through beautiful Somerset countryside, the Grand West Country Canal is a lovely place to cycle. Here, you will find cafes, public toilets, picnic areas, and you may even spot a horse drawn barge, which have been running along the canal for over 200 years. Many of the historical buildings along the canal have been well-preserved.
