September 4, 2024, Colchester Castle

This Norman castle dates from the second half of the 11th century. The keep is mostly intact and it's the largest example of its kind anywhere in Europe, built on the foundations of the Roman Temple of Claudius.

It's an ok enough stretch of road although not particularly special. There are many more scenic routes than this fairly anonymous stretch of tarmac.

Dedham Vale is an AONB that covers about 90 sq km crossing the Essex-Suffolk border. The River Stour winds its way through the valley, passing green rolling farmland. John Constable often featured the valley in his paintings, to the extent that the area is known as Constable Country. Some of his Dedham Vale paintings are on display at the V&A Museum in London.

Built towards the end of the 11th century, Colchester Castle is a Norman castle with a unique keep. The castle witnessed various battles including a three-month siege in 1216. By the 17th century, the castle fell into disrepair and some parts were demolished. The remaining building was used as a prison for some time before being converted in the Colchester Museum in 1860. Today you can visit the museum and its Roman artefacts.
