What a cracking view from this donated bench, a bit to cold for me today (Jan24) to sit around... The birds are a type of duck (sorry not my area of expertise), they were in the field to my left and I must have spooked them as they all took flight out to the mud flats.

Many walks start from Tollesbury village itself, where you can find street parking. The Tollesbury Marina area also serves as a convenient starting point for several coastal paths.
Yes, Tollesbury's open landscapes are great for walking with dogs. However, the area is rich in wildlife and includes grazing land for livestock. To protect the local fauna and farm animals, it's essential to keep your dog on a lead, especially within the Tollesbury Wick Marshes and RSPB Old Hall Marshes nature reserves.
The trails are predominantly flat, following the sea wall along the estuary. The paths are mostly unpaved and can be uneven, consisting of grass and earth. After rain or during high tides, sections of the marshland paths can become muddy and slippery, so sturdy, waterproof footwear is highly recommended.
Yes, the area offers several shorter routes perfect for a family outing. Besides the well-known easy loops, you can find other gentle strolls starting from the village. The Tollesbury Wick Marshes and RSPB Old Hall Marshes are a haven for birdwatchers. Depending on the season, you can spot large flocks of wading birds like Lapwing and Golden Plover, as well as Wigeon and Brent Geese. Birds of prey, including Marsh Harriers, are often seen hunting over the marshes. The area's grasslands also support small mammals and butterflies in the summer.
Tollesbury village has pubs and cafes that are perfect for a meal before or after your hike. For a longer walk with a destination, you could consider the challenging West Mersea Oyster Farm β Duck Decoy Hut loop from Tollesbury, which takes you towards West Mersea where you can find several places to eat.

The main attraction is the natural landscape of the Tollesbury Wick Marshes itself. Key features include the iconic red lightship moored in the estuary, the historic sail lofts at Tollesbury Marina, and the vast, open skies. The trails offer a constant view of the tidal creeks and mudflats that define this unique coastal environment.
