View from Newlands Corner

Highlight • Rest Area

I would certainly not recommend riding any of the roads up to Newlands Corner (especially the A25 from Dorking / Shere) during the evening rush hour. It is a very busy road and cars/vans here have very, very little patience and consideration for cyclists slogging up the hill and overtake often with inches to spare in their rush to get home. Not a problem going downhill because of the difference in speed. Worst place I've found around Guildford for evening rush hour drivers. Even the A3 is better (because it is usually very slow by then).

Chinthurst Hill Tower

Highlight • Forest

With extensive views and a tower on the summit, Chinthurst Hill is a picturesque nature reserve that is home to lots of wildlife. Birds you can observe include buzzards, sparrowhawks, red kites, and wrens. There are many species of butterfly, as well as roe deer, bats, and insects. The hillside has a broad mix of trees—including oak, sweet chestnut, hazel, and rowan—and is renowned for its wildflower displays. The tower you find on the summit was built in the late 1930s by Lord Inchcape and is Grade II-listed.

Newlands Corner sits upon the North Downs Way and is a fantastic spot to sit and take a break. You can also pick up some refreshments here too as there is a café in the car park. It is popular but there really is plenty of wide open space so pick your spot and enjoy the view. It is here that Agatha Christie's car was found after she went missing for 11 days in 1926.

Depending on the time of the day the queue for food is very long. Beautiful views. A25 is a bit too busy for me.

The lodge known as the Temple of the Four Winds was built around 1910 by Viscount Pirrie, a leading Irish shipbuilder and businessman. Viscount Pirrie The Viscount’s Witley Park estate included a deer park over this area and many elaborate picnic lunches were held at the lodge for his hunting friends. Viscount Pirrie used to enjoy looking out over his estate from here and admiring the extensive views. Sadly the lodge gradually fell into disrepair and was vandalised in 1959. By 1966 it had become a hazard and had to be dismantled. Now only the stone base remains, and over the years scrub undergrowth has begun too obscure some of the magnificent views.
