Reculver Towers and Roman Fort

Highlight • Monument

King Aethelberht I of Kent( c.590-616 AD) was the first king to convert to Christianity in 601 AD after the arrival of St Augustine and the Gregorian mission in 597 AD. The medieval minster or monastery dedicated to St Mary's, with its landmark twin towers, was founded on the site of a Roman fort at Reculver. The connection with the Anglo-Saxon Kings of Kent started at Reculver when King Ecgberht I gave the land over to a priest named Bassa in 669 AD. Eadberht II, was also buried here in the 760s. The minster became a parish church on the death of William the Conqueror in 1087 when churches and other properties were returned to the Archbishop of Canterbury.

Sandwich Town Centre

Highlight • Settlement

A quintessentially-English town, Sandwich has a fascinating history. The small town was once an important trade hub and part of the Cinque Ports network on the coast. The medieval buildings and old pubs in town hark back to this era.

Sandwich's most notable role in history is perhaps its ties to the popular food, the humble sandwich. John Montagu, the 4th Earl of Sandwich, allegedly invented the sandwich in the 18th century, putting together two pieces of bread and meat.

Botany Bay Chalk Cliffs

Highlight • Beach

A very pleasant place to spend a nice time. Remember that to get around the white cliffs you need to hit the drain. Otherwise the cliffs are under water. In summer, this place is unfortunately crowded with people.

January 1, 2026, Botany Bay Chalk Cliffs

Botany Bay, one of Thanet's most photographed bays, is famous. This hidden gem offers breathtaking views of white cliffs and beautiful chalk formations. At low tide, Botany Bay is an ideal spot for fossil hunting and exploring the tide pools. At high tide, there's plenty of exposed sand to discover, but due to the bay's shape, the ends are cut off at high tide. This magnificent, horseshoe-shaped bay is the main attraction of Broadstairs. It was the favorite holiday destination of Charles Dickens, who even dedicated a beloved story to it: "Our English Watering Place". The long sandy bay, the cliff-top promenade, and the wooden jetty make this bay a timelessly beautiful place.

Very pretty seaside town, never as busy as the the others along the Kent Coast, and a nice cycle route along the sea front.
