After completing my bikepacking tour in Sri Lanka, I got my bike serviced at Hinni’s Cycle Centre. Randeer, the mechanic did an excellent job, taking everything apart, cleaning, greasing and putting it back together. It took 4 hours and the bike was ready for another adventure. Excellent service. Thank you!

Hinni is an absolute biking nerd and his shop has not only top notch equipment but also comes across as a kind of museum. It was biking shop number five I looked at but here I got what I wanted and a bit more.😅

It is a good trip from Colombo to Panadura Beach. You have the option of the busy mainroad or get on the quiter backroads. Even swapping between the two options at any time is possible.

The almost 15 m high stone round tower was built in 1952 on Galbokka Point, the remains of an old fort. The construction on Colombo's waterfront became necessary because the Old Clocktower Lighthouse in the city center was increasingly obscured by neighboring buildings. The new beacon has a fire height of 26 m and is identified by a group of three white flashes with a recurrence of ten seconds. To make it easier to recognize as a landmark, the tower facing the lake is painted black and white. Source: https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Colombo_Lighthouse Note: In recent years, through landfill and land reclamation, a completely new district was created west of the Galbokka Lighthouse, called "Port City Colombo". As a result, the lighthouse is no longer on the waterfront and has lost its former importance.

The Old Clocktower Lighthouse is a clock tower and former lighthouse. The 29 m high and square masonry was built in 1860 in the center of Colombo as a clock tower. Five years later, the lantern was added and the structure was also put into operation as a lighthouse in 1865. As the beacon became increasingly obscured by surrounding buildings, the decision was made in 1952 to build a new lighthouse on the city's waterfront. There are over 115 road cycling routes available across Sri Lanka on komoot, catering to various skill levels. You'll find a mix of easy, moderate, and challenging paths to explore the island's diverse landscapes.
Sri Lanka offers incredibly diverse terrain for road cycling. You can experience flat coastal roads with ocean views, gently rolling plains in the Cultural Triangle, and challenging mountain climbs through the Central Highlands. This variety allows cyclists to traverse vastly different environments, from sun-kissed beaches to misty tea plantations, often within short distances.
Yes, Sri Lanka has several easy road cycling routes. For instance, the Colombo Clock Tower – Bolgoda Lake Bridge loop from Secretariat is an easy 24.2 km ride. Another option is the Roadbike loop from Thissamaharama, which is 43.4 km and also rated easy. These routes typically feature less elevation gain and are great for a relaxed ride.
For experienced riders seeking a challenge, the Central Highlands offer demanding climbs. A notable route is the Kalutara Bridge loop from Moratuwa Railway Station, a difficult 203.7 km trail with significant elevation changes, often taking over 8 hours to complete. The region's mountain ranges, like the Knuckles, also provide thrilling, albeit challenging, experiences.
The best time for road cycling in Sri Lanka largely depends on the region you plan to visit due to the island's two monsoon seasons. Generally, the dry season from December to March is ideal for the west and south coasts and the Central Highlands. For the east coast, the dry season runs from May to September. The cooler climate in the Central Highlands makes it suitable for cycling even during parts of the monsoon, though elevations can be challenging.
Road cycling routes in Sri Lanka often pass through incredibly scenic areas. In the Central Highlands, you'll find sprawling tea plantations and misty valleys. Coastal routes offer breathtaking views of golden beaches and the Indian Ocean. You can also cycle through the Cultural Triangle to explore ancient sites. Notable landmarks and viewpoints include the Nine Arches Bridge, the Sigiriya (Lion Rock), and the View of Sigiriya from Pidurangala Rock.
Yes, many road cycling routes in Sri Lanka are designed as loops, allowing you to start and end at the same point. Examples include the popular Fishermen's Harbor loop from Unawatuna, which offers coastal views, and the Colombo Clock Tower – Flyover View loop from Pangiriwatta, navigating urban landscapes.
The road cycling experience in Sri Lanka is highly rated by the komoot community, with an average score of 4.6 stars from over 60 reviews. The diverse terrain and rich cultural heritage make it a unique destination for outdoor enthusiasts.
Absolutely. Sri Lanka's Central Highlands are home to numerous waterfalls, and some cycling routes may offer access or views of them. While specific cycling routes directly to waterfalls aren't always available, the region itself is rich in natural beauty. You can also find routes that lead to or pass near natural monuments like the iconic World's End in Horton Plains National Park.
Yes, the Cultural Triangle in north-central Sri Lanka is perfect for combining cycling with historical exploration. While cycling through this region, you can explore ancient sites and landmarks such as the Dambulla Cave Temple Complex and the Golden Temple of Dambulla. The terrain here is often flat to gently rolling, making it accessible for a cultural cycling experience.
Yes, Sri Lanka offers options for longer road cycling tours. For example, the Bolgoda Lake Bridge – Kalutara Bridge loop from Wellawatta is a moderate 112.7 km route.
