The River Wensum is a chalk river flowing from Whissonsett to the River Yarr in Norwich. In the early 2000s, the river was in a state of decline due to siltation and pollution. Since then, improvement works have been undertaken to better the river quality.

Sparham Pools is a wetland nature reserve in a former gravel quarry. The chalk streams that feed the ponds are clear and clean and the area is now rich in wildlife. Look out for a variety of duck species, including Shoveler, Gadwall, Pochard, and Tufted duck, as well as the less common Goldeneye and Goosander.

It's a nice feature to test your handle bars cycling up to the road. :) However, once up on the road, do not get confused by the Marriott Way sign across the road pointing leftward, as you need to turn right and left onto Station Road and descend down quite a chunky gravel descent (possibly due to construction work).

My poor photo quality doesn't really show the radiance of the orange. Does anyone know what they are growing?

From Costessey in the east, this bridleway passes through a beautiful section of countryside before heading into the busy city centre of Norwich.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are there many circular walks available around Attlebridge?

Yes, the area is well-suited for circular walks. Many routes combine sections of the flat Marriott's Way trail with other public footpaths through the Wensum river valley. This allows for a variety of loops without having to retrace your steps. A good example of an easy loop is the St Margaret's Church loop from Swannington.

Where can I park to access the walking trails in Attlebridge?

There are several informal parking options for accessing the trails. A small car park is available near St Margaret's Church in Morton-on-the-Hill, which is a convenient starting point for many popular walks. You can also find lay-bys and on-street parking in and around the village, but be sure to park considerately.

Are the hiking trails near Attlebridge suitable for dogs?

Most trails in the Attlebridge area, especially the wide paths of Marriott's Way, are great for walking with dogs. However, you will be passing through farmland and near nature reserves, so it's important to keep your dog under control, particularly around livestock and wildlife. For a dedicated off-leash run, Danby Wood near Norwich is a popular choice with local dog owners.

What kind of wildlife might I see while hiking?

The Wensum river valley is rich in wildlife. While walking, you can often spot birds of prey like kestrels and owls. The area is also home to hares and deer. If you are quiet and patient, especially near the River Wensum or at the Sparham Pools Nature Reserve, you might be lucky enough to see kingfishers or even otters.

Are there any easy, family-friendly walks in the area?

Definitely. The terrain around Attlebridge is mostly flat, making it ideal for families. The Marriott's Way path is particularly suitable for all ages. For a shorter, manageable walk that's great for all skill levels, consider the Car Park – St Margaret's Church loop from Swannington.

How difficult are the hikes around Attlebridge?

The vast majority of hikes are rated as easy or moderate. The landscape is predominantly flat, with very little elevation change. The main challenge can be the distance on longer routes. Can I get to the Attlebridge trails using public transport?

Accessing the trails directly by public transport can be challenging as Attlebridge is a small village with limited services. The most practical approach is to take a bus to a nearby larger village or the outskirts of Norwich and then walk to join a trail like Marriott's Way.
