In the source area of the Isar, there are numerous water outlets, including at Halleranger, in Rossloch, at Lafatscher, etc. However, the origin of a river is defined as the place from which water flows year-round, as it does here at the Isar's source. According to the "Grundbuch-Anlegungsakt" (Land Registry Act) of the cadastral municipality of Scharnitz from 1854, the Isar originates in the "Scharnitzer Wald" (Scharnitz Forest). Land parcel 794/1 and the water rights are owned by the municipality of Scharnitz. This forest area was already called "beim Ursprung" (at the origin) or "bei die Flüss" (at the rivers) in ancient times. By seeping through the mountain, the water picks up numerous trace elements and minerals. It often takes years for the rain or snow that falls in the high mountains to become spring water. Due to the rich ingredients in the water, it has become home to numerous small organisms in the immediate outlet area. Over the centuries, its own world of plants and bacteria has also formed in the sediment area (riverbank sand). On its 283 km long journey to the confluence with the Danube, the Isar grows into the main river of Bavaria. In earlier times, spreading fear and terror during floods, but also bringing blessings and prosperity to the towns and cities along its banks, the Isar is still a part of the culture and history of the Alpine region today. Numerous tales and countless songs accompany the Isar through time. For a long time, the Isar served as a transport route through logging, to bring the wood from the "Scharnitzer Wald" to Munich. Its water powered the wheels and mills, saws and forges. The gravel and rounded stones that the river carried down from the mountain valleys were once used to build the houses of Scharnitz. Particularly sought after was the "Bachholz" (stream wood) that was washed ashore, carried along during the snowmelt and after storms, and used as firewood. Ultimately, however, it is above all the clean, clear, cold, and turquoise-blue water that carved its path through the mountains and created an impressive gorge at the valley exit.

One of the Isar springs originates under the bush. The water is pushing out of the earth. Anyone cycling the Isar cycle path should take their time and go to the springs. The circular route also only takes about 15 minutes.
