In 1450, the town wall of Altentreptow with originally three town gates was built. The Brandenburg Gate is the southern one of them. After the Thirty Years' War, large parts of the town wall and the rampart were demolished. In addition to the Brandenburg Gate, the Demmin Gate (with a high tower) and remains of the fortifications were preserved. Later, the gate served as a small prison.

The old town dates back to a Slavic settlement from the 12th century and received town rights in 1245. It was long surrounded by a double town wall (today largely disappeared). Two medieval town gates from around 1450 have been preserved: the Brandenburg Gate Tower and the Demmin Gate Tower.
