On the Upper Don Valley section of the Trans Pennine Trail, the tunnel is part of the abandoned railway line between Penistone and Wortley. It's lit and super echoy so quite fun to play in. It's also always really cold, so great on a hot summer day.

Yes, the area is well-suited for circular hikes. Many trails are designed to bring you back to your starting point without retracing your steps. These routes often combine sections of the Trans Pennine Trail with local footpaths through woodlands and fields, offering a varied experience.
For a shorter, accessible outing, consider the Upper Don Trail Tunnel loop from Thurgoland. It's a relatively flat and manageable walk that includes the interesting feature of the Thurgoland Tunnel. Another excellent option is Worsbrough Mill Country Park, which is highly regarded for its easy-to-follow paths, facilities, and abundant birdlife around the reservoir.
Most trails in the Thurgoland area are great for walking with dogs, especially the wide, open paths along the Trans Pennine Trail and through local woodlands like Bagger Wood. However, always be prepared to encounter livestock in fields, in which case you should keep your dog on a lead. Some local pubs are also dog-friendly, allowing you to combine a walk with a refreshment stop.
The region's industrial heritage is a key feature of its trails. The most prominent landmarks are the Thurgoland Tunnels and the Rumtickle Viaduct, which were part of the 19th-century Sheffield, Ashton-Under-Lyne and Manchester Railway. The newer tunnel is now an integral part of the Upper Don Trail, allowing you to walk or cycle through a piece of history.
The sections of the Trans Pennine Trail around Thurgoland, including the Upper Don Trail, are generally well-maintained and follow the flat gradients of the former railway lines. This makes them suitable for walkers, cyclists, and horse riders. While the main paths are solid, some smaller offshoot trails, especially along the River Don, can get muddy, so appropriate footwear is recommended.
Yes, for those seeking a more strenuous day out, the Worsbrough Reservoir – Doe Lane Footpath loop from Crane Moor offers a significant challenge. This long-distance route covers varied terrain and provides a comprehensive tour of the wider landscape, including the popular Worsbrough Country Park.
Several trails offer scenic views across the River Don valley. The Thurgoland Boundary Walk, in particular, provides elevated perspectives as it navigates the hillsides around the village. The paths that climb out of the valley floor through local woodlands often open up to reveal impressive vistas of the meandering river below.
Yes, you can explore the area's industrial past on the Wortley Wagyu Burger Bar – California Quarry Remains loop from Wortley. This moderate hike takes you through woodland to the site of the old California Quarry, offering a glimpse into the region's quarrying history.
For walks starting in the village, on-street parking is often available, but please park considerately. For routes exploring specific attractions, dedicated car parks are a better option. For example, Worsbrough Mill Country Park is noted for having easy parking. Similarly, trailheads for popular routes like those around Langsett Reservoir often have designated parking areas.
Several routes pass through or near villages like Thurgoland and Wortley, where you can find traditional pubs for a post-hike meal or drink. Some routes are even named for their proximity to local eateries. It's always a good idea to check opening times in advance, especially on weekdays.
