Kirk Bannister
April 11, 2026, Pingo Trail Bomb Hole

A really nice single track path, that seems to abruptly end with a drop into a steep valley, which has been nicknamed the bomb hole, I went down this, on foot with the bike, my friends found a way around it, took us both about the same time, I was significantly more winded by the experience!.

Take time to go off the trail to the bird hides and vantage points around the water. The route is best in spring before the nettles take over the path in summer!

The pub in Thomson (The Chequers) on Griston Road is worth a visit...old with lots of character.

What is the Pingo Trail and what makes it special?

The Pingo Trail is a well-known route that loops around Thompson Common. Its main feature is the unique 'pingo' ponds, which are rare shallow pools formed by melting ice during the last ice age. These ponds create a special wetland habitat, making the area one of Norfolk's most important sites for dragonflies and the UK's rarest amphibian, the northern pool frog. The trail itself is approximately 8 miles (12.9 km) and offers a varied walk through woodland, heath, and farmland.

Are the hiking trails around Carbrooke suitable for dogs?

Yes, many trails in the area are great for walking with dogs. However, you'll be walking through sensitive nature reserves like Thompson Common and areas with farmland. It's essential to keep your dog on a lead, especially during bird nesting season (typically March to August) and around livestock, to protect the local wildlife.

Wayland Wood, just south of Watton, is an excellent choice for a family outing. It features a circular footpath of about 1.86 miles (3 km) through ancient woodland, which is generally suitable for strollers, though it can get muddy. What kind of wildlife might I see while hiking?

The area is rich in wildlife. Thompson Common is a hotspot for dragonflies and damselflies, and you might spot birds like warblers, marsh harriers, or kites. In Wayland Wood, you could see roe and muntjac deer. Thetford Forest is also a haven for various bird species and other woodland creatures.

Are there any good circular walks in the area?
