The house on the border is probably the most famous building in Vacha. It was the printing works and the home of the Hoßfeld family. The Rhönzeitung printing works had always been close to the border between Hesse and Thuringia. For tax reasons, the building was extended into Thuringia in 1924, so that from then on 1/12 of the house belonged to Thuringia and was also registered there. This became a problem when the GDR declared itself an independent state, because when it became clear that the GDR would be heavily fortified in 1952 and that the printing works would be expropriated, the Hoßfeld family quickly moved all of their equipment to the Hessian part of the building on December 31, 1951. That same night, they put up a wall to the Thuringian part of their house and built a new entrance door in the western part. From that point on, the East German twelfth of their house was no longer accessible and no longer part of their printing works. Thus, their spontaneous escape to the West was successful. In 1976, renegotiations resulted in the empty twelfth of their house being allowed to go to Hesse. The current border now runs in an arc around the house and it is completely in Hesse.
