At the center of this shrine dedicated to the Mother of God, built just a stone's throw from the far more famous "Brubbel" (Wallenborner cold water geyser), stands a statue of her. The depiction shows her with her son Jesus Christ, taken down from the cross, whose dead body she once more takes into her lap before the burial.

With the sentence “There are things that happen there, in that wondrous region… where people think more with their cudgel than with their brain, where, however, one at least respects the dead” ends one of the many beautiful stories told by Giovanni Guareschi – the literary “father” of “Don Camillo and Peppone”. To understand it, one must recall the political situation in Italy at that time, i.e. immediately after the end of the Second World War: the monarchy had been abolished, the royal family in exile, partly the communists in power (also in Don Camillo’s village). In the story “The old teacher”, the aforementioned lady, who had taught generations of villagers the ABC, has passed away. Towards Mayor Peppone and Don Camillo, she had expressed as her last wish to be buried with her flag – the old one “with the coat of arms” from the time of the monarchy – over her coffin. However, all factions of the municipal council had spoken out against it, Peppone replies to them: “so I tell you… that I don’t give a damn about your opinion and that Signora Cristina will be taken to the cemetery tomorrow with the flag she likes, because I value her dead more than you alive”. Hence the sentence quoted at the beginning: “where, however, one at least respects the dead.”

My grandfather had the Manstein Bridge built so that the grain wagons could get through the forest to the mills better and safer! 😉 Claudia Manstein
