Gygrestolen Rock Formations

Highlight • Natural Monument

Much longer than 2 hours and 10 minutes. The route consists of 80% steep slope with rocks and tree roots. So it's a lot of scrambling. We reached the top in 2 hours and then the descent had to begin. Beautiful view, but not a short walk.

Heddal Stave Church

Highlight • Religious Site

The impressive Heddal stave church was built in the 1200s. It was built from ore-pine and has beautiful carved portals and inventory. The largest of 28 stave churchs in Norway is still in use for ordinary events in the summer, but also for weddings.

It is open from late June through late September. You can book a guided tour in English.

Himingen Summit (1,066 m)

Highlight (Segment) • Summit

Fantastic evening tour to perhaps the most impressive summit of Lifjell. On the south side you climb the summit via a path that heads further up in the direction of the summit.
The ascent is technically simple but physically demanding.
The very wide "summit ridge" invites you to search for your own trail. From the summit you have a great view over the Lifjell and can u.a. spy on the Gaustatoppen.

A beautiful stretch of trail near the canal between Ulefoss and Strengen. The word "murane" in Norwegian means "stone walls." A section of the ancient road that connected the two settlements is preserved here.

Beautiful lake above where you can swim (Venetjønn). Lots of roots on the paths, but that makes it feel like climbing a gigantic tree. Tip: you have to pay for parking, but this is only possible via Vipps. If you live outside Scandinavia, these apps are unfortunately not available. We asked a Norwegian hiker to pay for us (because the sign must be passed on) and simply gave her 4.5 euros in cash). I have no idea if there are many checks there. There is nothing but forest, a sign with a map and a parking lot. No catering.
