't Oud Sashuis is actually a block of lock keeper's houses (hence: two front doors, one of which is now converted into a 'counter' where you can order your drinks) dating back to 1860.

To my knowledge, it's the only bridge where you don't swear, but are actually grateful that you have to wait because a boat needs to go through the lock. The manual lifting, the whole lock process, and the cheerful note from the lock keeper who politely thanks those waiting afterward... it's quite an experience.

Early walkers will be disappointed: Wim doesn't open the shop before 1 p.m.

This meander of the Leie was cut off in 1867 and completely encloses the Leie meadows of Astene and Bachte. The winding riverbed is a magnet for numerous plants and animals. (natuurpunt.be)

Café at Astene Sas, ideal for a stopover on a bike ride. Recommended

The lock dates from 1861 when a 100m passage was dug to save about 5 km of bends in the Leie. At the lock itself, which is still operated by hand, there are two lock master houses in a unique setting, dating from the 1860s.
