The story tells that the pirate Klaus Störtebeker sought refuge in the port of Marienhafe at the end of the 14th century. At that time, fleeing from the Hanseatic League, Denmark, and the Teutonic Order, the pirates Klaus Störtebeker and Gödeke Michel fled to the North Sea. Here lived the Frisians, who were at odds with the Hanseatic League, but also fought amongst themselves. Therefore, the pirates were received with open arms. Today, the landmark of the Störtebekerland offers a magnificent view over the East Frisian landscape. On the first floor of the tower is the Störtebeker Chamber. Klaus Störtebeker is said to have lived there during his stays in Marienhafe around 1400. Today it houses the tower museum with documentation of its construction history.
