The museum's origins date back to the 1897 World's Fair, when the section dedicated to the Congo colony was established in the Palais de l'Afrique (formerly the Palais des Colonies) in Tervueren Park. Following its success, and at the instigation of King Leopold II, the temporary exhibition was converted into a permanent museum and scientific institute dedicated to the Belgian Congo, with the aim of generating interest and showcasing the country's economic potential.

The Palais de l'Afrique quickly became too small, so Leopold II commissioned Charles Girault, architect of the Petit Palais in Paris, to build a new museum and redevelop the entire site. Leopold II died before the project was completed, and the museum was inaugurated in 1910 by King Albert I.

The museum was closed for five years, from 2013 to 2018, for major restoration and renovation work.

Saint Hubert Chapel

Highlight • Religious Site

This small baroque chapel is dedicated to Saint Hubertus, patron saint of hunters and gamekeepers, and thus refers to the former function of the park: it was once a hunting ground for the nobility. According to legend, it was built on the spot where the saint died.
The chapel served as a place of worship for Tervuren Castle, one of the most important castles of the Dukes of Brabant.

Laeken Castle

Highlight • Castle

Laeken Castle, built in 1782, is surrounded by a large 120 ha park. The residence then bore the name of Schonenberg. Under Napoleon, Schonenberg became a military headquarters, and even a prison. Rebuilt several times, the castle then passed, after the revolts against William I, into the hands of the Belgian State, which made it the residence of Leopold I. April 2, 2026, Kasteel van Hoeilaart

Two important lordships formed the basis of the current Hoeilaart: the lordship of Ter Heyde south of the IJse on the one hand, and the lordship of Holaer or Hoeilaart north of the IJse on the other. Here once stood the castle of the Ter Heyde lordship from the fifteenth century. That lordship ceased to exist after the abolition of the ancien régime. The current castle was built in 1858 on the orders of baron Jean de Man d’Attenrode (mayor of Hoeilaart from 1854-1878) and his wife Maria Carolina d’Ormesson. It is therefore not a remnant of the old lordship. BUT: the chapel and former closed farm next to it are. This building has now, as others have mentioned, been given a different function and dominates the view in the park. September 17, 2025, Sint Hubertuskapel

The veneration of Saint Hubert in Tervuren, the presumed place of death of the patron saint of hunters, dates back to at least the 16th century and is probably even older. Every year on the last Sunday in October, an open-air mass is celebrated there in honor of Saint Hubert, and horses and dogs are blessed to protect them from running amok.

Almaric de Bigard, who was the first lord of Bigard, lived there around 1110. In 1422, Guillaume Rongman, lord of Bigard, was made captain of the city of Brussels by Philip the Good. Guillaume Estor was appointed baker of Brabant by letters patent of Charles the Bold, then became alderman of Brussels in 1475. Jean Estor and his mother were judged heretics (for Protestantism) and executed on January 6, 1548, their property confiscated and the Lordship of Bigard sold to Gaspard Schetz, Lord of Grobbendonck, on February 14, 1549, for 17,800 pounds. The lordship was erected into a marquisate under the name of Boisschot, when Helen of Boisschot, married Charles Ferdinand, Count of Königsegg-Rothenfels, interim regent of the Netherlands. Count Ferdinand of Boisschot in the middle of the 17th century had many works done, and had new buildings built. In 1902, the whole was very dilapidated and Raymond Pelgrims de Bigard took thirty years to rehabilitate it.
