The castle originally took the name Castrum Gironis: according to some from the name of Hieron of Syracuse (to whom the first settlement dating back to the 5th century BC is attributed), according to others from the "circumference of walls" fortified that surrounded the small island of trachyte rock.

The "Baia Baths" extend across the entire slope of the Baia hill and are organized on a series of terraces, each of which is occupied by residences conceived as independent architectural organisms, connected to each other by stepped ramps. The first of these residences is known as the "Villa dell'Ambulatio" and includes rooms, with different uses, overlooking six terraces. The entire complex had marble and black and white mosaic floors. The central part of the baths complex is occupied by a nucleus called the "Sosandra" which is divided into four terraces and is characterized by the presence of stucco and refined mosaic floors. From the largest of the rooms that make up this complex comes the marble statue of Aspasia also known as Aphrodite Sosandra (a Roman copy of an original Greek statue). Other thermal buildings complete the complex, including the one known as the "Temple of Mercury" characterized by a circular thermal pool with a domed vault, not fully known because it is partially buried and submerged, in which the marble head of Apollo was found (copy of a Greek bronze original). Open every day except Monday from 9.00 until one hour before sunset. The cost of the ticket is € 8. https://www.campiflegrei.it/desktop/Parco_Archeologico_di_Baia.html

The name Avernus derives from the Greek άορνος (without birds), in fact it is said that this absence was due to the fact that the waters of the lake exhaled particular gases that did not allow the birds to live. According to the Greek and then Roman religion, it was an access to the Underworld, kingdom of the god Pluto: for this reason, the Roman underworld (the Greek Hades) is also called Avernus and it is no coincidence that mythology recognizes it as the gateway to the afterlife. , as well as the earthly abode of the fallen angel Lucifer. Lake Averno lies within an extinct volcanic crater, born 4,000 years ago.

Monte Di Procida features approximately 30 road cycling routes, catering to various skill levels. You'll find a good mix of easy, moderate, and some more challenging options.
Yes, Monte Di Procida offers plenty of easy road cycling routes. About 20 of the available routes are classified as easy, perfect for beginners or those looking for a relaxed ride. A great option is the Aragonese Castle – Casina Vanvitelliana, Fusaro loop from Bacoli, which is an 8.8-mile path winding past historical landmarks and offering views of Lake Fusaro.
While most routes are easy to moderate, experienced riders can find challenges, particularly with elevation gains on the volcanic hills. The Naples Waterfront Cycle Path – Plebiscito Square loop from Torregaveta, at nearly 30 miles with significant elevation, offers a more demanding experience and extensive coastal views.
Many of the road cycling routes in Monte Di Procida are designed as loops, allowing you to start and finish at the same point. For example, the Lake Avernus loop from Lucrino is a popular 19.1-mile circular trail leading through volcanic landscapes and around the mythological Lake Avernus.
The routes often pass by significant natural and historical landmarks. You can expect to see ancient lakes like Lake Avernus and Lake Lucrino, as well as historical sites such as the Macellum (Temple of Serapis) in Pozzuoli. Coastal routes also offer stunning views of the Bay of Naples and nearby islands.
The Phlegraean Fields region, including Monte Di Procida, generally enjoys a mild Mediterranean climate. Spring (April-May) and autumn (September-October) are ideal, offering pleasant temperatures and less crowded routes. Summers can be hot, especially in July and August, so early morning or late afternoon rides are recommended then.
Yes, Monte Di Procida and the surrounding Phlegraean Fields area are reasonably well-connected by public transport, including local train lines that can often accommodate bicycles during off-peak hours. This allows for flexible starting points for many routes, such as those originating from Torregaveta or Bacoli.
Absolutely. The region is known for its panoramic views. Many coastal routes offer breathtaking vistas of the Bay of Naples, the islands of Procida and Ischia, and the Phlegraean Fields. The volcanic hills also provide elevated points for scenic overlooks.
The komoot community highly rates road cycling in Monte Di Procida, with an average score of 4.6 stars from over 40 reviews. Cyclists often praise the diverse terrain, combining coastal roads with volcanic hills and ancient lakes, as well as the stunning views of the Bay of Naples and the historical landmarks encountered along the way.
While specific 'family-friendly' designations aren't always explicit for road cycling, many of the easier, flatter loop routes around the lakes or along less trafficked coastal sections could be suitable for families with older children or those comfortable with road cycling. Always check the route's difficulty and traffic conditions beforehand.
Parking availability varies by starting point. Many towns and coastal areas, such as Bacoli, Fusaro, or Lucrino, offer public parking facilities. It's advisable to check specific route starting points on komoot for user-generated tips on convenient parking locations.
The charm of Monte Di Procida lies in its blend of well-known coastal paths and quieter inland roads that weave through the volcanic landscape. Exploring routes that venture slightly off the main tourist trails, perhaps around lesser-known agricultural areas or smaller villages, can reveal unique perspectives and a more tranquil cycling experience. The Monte di Procida loop from Miliscola offers a shorter, scenic ride around the peninsula itself.
