March 16, 2025, Riserva Naturale di Torre Guaceto

Update March 15, 2025: This nature reserve is not worth a visit because of the extremely polluted environment by litter. During the entire walk there is both waste washed up by the sea and dumped on site. Very sad to see…

Lovely rest area on the coastal path, featuring a series of stone stools and tables…. The tables are millstones of living stone!

Torre Pozzelle is one of the most beautiful coastal areas of the city of Ostuni (BR) in Puglia. This coastal stretch is characterized by a series of small sandy coves (five to be precise) interspersed with large stretches of rocks, lapped by the sea and surrounded by the Mediterranean scrub typical of coastal dunes. An ancient Aragonese tower built between 1565 and 1569 acts as a lookout over this uncontaminated landscape. The coastal tower has half collapsed and despite this it retains a notable charm. The naturalistic area of the coast of Torre Pozzelle contains a high biodiversity of plant and animal species. A place that, thanks to recent protection, can be admired in all its beauty. In addition to 5 enchanting sandy coves enclosed by low rocky cliffs, there is a rare forest of centuries-old juniper trees as well as a small wetland. Torre Pozzella can be reached from the E55 (SS379) that goes from Bari to Ostuni.

Torre Pozzelle is a coastal tower classifiable as typical of the Kingdom, whose origin dates back to the Orden General of Perafan De Ribera (1563) which in that period greatly increased the number of coastal towers in the area. In ancient cartography it took on various names including “Puzzelle”, “Puzzelli”, “Puzzeglie”, “Puzzella” and “de’ Pozzelli”.

Inside the Torre Guaceto nature reserve there is the sandy beach of Penna Grossa, the only beach in the reserve. It can be accessed from the Penna Grossa road which leads to the free beach. Excellent for a stop and relaxation.
