The best MTB trails around Riffian - Rifiano

The valley station of the Hirzer cable car is located in the mountain village of Saltaus in the Passeier Valley (South Tyrol) at an altitude of 490 meters. It serves as an ideal starting point for quickly reaching the extensive hiking area of the Hirzer high plateau.

From the bridge that crosses the Passer at this point, there is a magnificent view of the rushing water, as well as the surrounding landscape in the Passeier Valley.

The Parish Church of Dorf Tirol "Dedicated to St. John the Baptist" Our parish church is dedicated to St. John the Baptist. It is first mentioned in documents in 1164. However, at that time - probably as the baptistery for this region - it was already quite old. The church was originally built in the Romanesque style. Around 1370, it was extended with the current High Gothic choir. The architecture in the choir is noteworthy: the four bipartite pointed arch windows with strict tracery, the richly profiled ribs in the vault, God the Father and a rosette as keystones. At the end of the consoles are the symbols of the four evangelists. The tower is still preserved in the Romanesque style. It was only in the 17th century that it was given the octagonal lantern and the current roof structure. The formerly Romanesque nave stood until 1845. Documents report that it had become too small and dilapidated. Unfortunately, it was torn down, and in 1856 this Neo-Gothic nave was adapted to the choir remarkably well. The high altar was erected in 1860 by Alois Sint, a master craftsman from Algund. The two youthful bishops in the lower niches - St. Nicholas and another (?) bishop - come from the central shrine of the former Gothic winged altarpiece (late 15th century). They were repainted in 1860 by Fr. Pendl. In the upper niche stands John the Baptist, a figure from the late 15th century, which was acquired later as an antique. The high altar was only restored in the late autumn of 1973. The choir stalls also come from Master Alois Sint. The two processional poles - movable poles with candle holders - come from the "sculptor Johannes Leither". He delivered them in 1726. They depict the Good Shepherd and St. Rupert. The crucifixion group on the left front wall of the nave was created around 1700. In 1974, the original paintwork was uncovered again. The baptismal font made of white Laaser marble is a remarkably beautiful work. Magnificent tracery with intersecting lines and rosettes. Fruits and tendrils can be seen on the handle-like attachments. It was carved shortly after 1500. In the upper inscription, the words are written in Gothic minuscule: "euntes in universum mundum predicate evangelium universae creaturae" ("Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature").
