The oldest part of Oltrona, located between the Ronco and San Mamette hills, in the sunniest and most sheltered position from the winds, is made up of the classic Lombard courtyards, once used as peasant dwellings, stables, granaries and barns, closed by arches, doors or gates.

The Valmorea Railway, inaugurated in 1926, was an international line that connected the north of Milan with Mendrisio. The Valmorea station was the border station. After just two years, however, the fascist regime decreed its closure. Until 1977, only two short sections remained in operation that served some local factories. Today, thanks to the Friends of the Valmorea Railway Association, the Valmorea railway can be traveled from Mendrisio to Malnate Olona. The 7.5 km of track have been renovated for tourist use: on rare occasions it is possible to travel the route on vintage trains.

The church and the baptistery are the result of the patronage of Cardinal Branda Castiglioni who, between 1422 and 1435, renovated the village of Castiglione Olona, calling the most important artists of the time from Tuscany. Of Lombard Gothic style, the church was consecrated in 1425. Its interior is entirely frescoed: the Stories of the Virgin* painted by Masolino da Panicale (1434) are narrated in the apse cap. On the walls below there are frescoes of "stories of saints" attributed to Paolo Schiavo and Vecchietta, Tuscan artists of the 15th century. In the Baptistery there is the very famous cycle with the life of Saint John, an excellent work by Masolino, from 1436.
