A tributary of the Trave sets the wheel of the historic grain water mill in motion, conjuring up a bit of medieval flair in the town centre of Bad Oldesloe.

The origins of today's church on the Kirchberg in Bad Oldesloe date back to 1150, when Bishop Vicelin consecrated the first stone church in Oldesloe and named it after the apostle Peter. The Vizelin Church was badly damaged in the war of Duke Erich V of Saxe-Lauenburg against Lübeck in 1415 and was rebuilt. In the years before 1537, the church burned down due to a lightning strike and could not be re-roofed until 1542. In the middle of the 18th century, the church was so dilapidated that it was demolished in 1757 and construction of the current late baroque building began, which was completed in 1763. In 1802, a turret with a small clock bell was built on the church, which initially had no tower, donated by the Danish King Christian VII. It was removed after a lightning strike in 1818. Until 1884, the bells hung in a separate bell tower. The tower in the neo-Romanesque-neo-Gothic style was added in 1886 and has since dominated the cityscape with a height of around 60 meters.
