In the second quarter of the 13th century, the nave was built as a rectangular hall, perhaps as a chapel without a choir. Its brick architecture is still well preserved on the north side with the profiled base, two small arched windows (other windows changed), double dentil frieze and, above all, the arched portal inserted into an extended frame with richly structured molded stone frame and old iron-clad door. A higher, different base and a late Gothic console frieze show that the nave was extended to the west in the 15th century, perhaps after it became a parish church. The rectangular choir was probably added at the same time. Its gable is decorated with late Gothic circular and cross panels. In 1887/88 the wooden tower to the west of the church, which was perhaps still from the late Middle Ages, was replaced by the 52 m high brick tower based on a design by the Flensburg government architect Plüddemann (later city planning officer of Breslau). At the same time, the entire south side received a cladding made of machine stone with new pointed arched windows and a neo-Gothic framing of the portal.

On the homepage of the church district Schleswig-Flensburg you can read: "In the second quarter of the 13th century the nave was built as a rectangular hall, as a chapel perhaps without a choir. Its brick architecture is on the north side with the profiled plinth, two small arched windows (further Window changed), double serrated frieze and, above all, the arched portal with richly structured molded stone frame and old iron-studded door, which was inserted in a protruding frame, is still in good condition. ... The large late Gothic winged altar in the choir was carved around 1500 by an unknown master who perhaps shortly before had the similar reredos in the nearby Steinberg Church. The shrine encloses a crucifixion full of figures, full of life; the twelve apostles stand in the wings under tracery canopies. " A visit was unfortunately not possible today, because it is confirmation!

Along the varied educational trail, you will discover the most beautiful nature and cultural and historical monuments. The starting point at the St. Laurentius Church is on a moraine ridge and the path leads you through a cultural landscape shaped by the Ice Age. From the Lippingau tunnel valley to a spring to beautiful ponds and forest, you will experience wild and romantic nature here. And you can still learn a lot from the information boards.

The St. Laurentius Church in Sterup was built in 1230 in the late Romanesque style. St. Laurentius Church was originally supposed to be a branch of the Marienkirche in Esgrus. However, it became one of the most imposing churches in the region. The neo-Gothic tower was added in 1888 after the old bell house was demolished. It rises about 50 meters. The townscape of Sterup is strongly influenced by the church and tower and the subsequent cemetery. Inside the church are the carved Annen altar from 1480, the nave from the 13th century and the Riffel picture (1751) by Peter Hansen Brekenfeld.
