At this spot originally stood a wooden chapel, which, according to a chronicle from Stift Rein, was built in 1560 after the victory over the plague. People who had died of the plague at that time were not allowed to be buried in the cemeteries. They were mostly buried in mass graves along the church paths, where Marian chapels were often erected. This chapel was replaced in 1779 by the Baroque wayside shrine with a sandstone statue of Mary Immaculata. The chapel owes its name to the former inn Winter on the opposite side of the street. In 2012, the damage threatening its substance could no longer be overlooked. Ing. Manfred Strimitzer founded the association for the renovation of the Winterkapelle to save the Baroque jewel from decay. It is thanks to this association and the support of volunteers that the chapel has been restored to its full beauty. In September 2015, the Winterkapelle was finally reconsecrated and has since served for various festive occasions in the church year.
