Lake Bolsena, located between Lazio, Umbria, and Tuscany, is the largest volcanic lake in Europe. A true natural wonder, thanks to its breathtaking landscapes, clear waters, quiet beaches, and villages rich in history and culture, this lake is an ideal destination for those who love tranquility, culture, and nature.

The imposing fortress was built in several phases between the 11th and 14th centuries, during the period in which Bolsena was repeatedly contested between the great Orvieto families of the Monaldeschi, of the Guelph party, and the Filippeschi, of the Ghibelline party. The fortress has a trapezoidal plan and four different towers , which testify to the construction phases and the original Gothic structure. The towers are crowned with battlements and serrated corbels, while on the lower level, the remains of the fortifications commissioned by Pope Adrian IV (1154–1159) to defend Bolsena from the attacks of Frederick Barbarossa are still visible.

The historic center of Bolsena climbs from the lake toward the medieval fortress, through stone alleys, arches, and glimpses that suddenly open onto the water. The tuff houses and small squares tell a story that intertwines the Middle Ages and lakeside tradition. The spiritual heart of the village is the Basilica of Santa Cristina, linked to the famous Eucharistic Miracle of the 13th century.

The complex, with its entrance on Via della Cava, lies beneath Orvieto's oldest neighborhood. Divided into nine underground areas, it is rich in Etruscan, medieval, and Renaissance finds, brought to light only recently after nearly four centuries of abandonment. The tour isn't very long (about 30 minutes if you read each description carefully), but it's absolutely worth it, especially for the price of just 4 euros.

The medieval quarter of Orvieto, located on the western slope of the cliff, represents the oldest and most original part of the city. Characterized by narrow streets, tuff houses, and picturesque views, it includes the historic Via della Cava, an ancient access route to the city, with the Porta Maggiore and the remains of Etruscan walls. Here are also the Pozzo della Cava, the small church of the Madonna della Cava, and two imposing "fortress-churches": San Giovenale and San Giovanni Evangelista, built in strategic positions to control the territory. Panoramic routes such as the one along Ripa Medici or between the two churches offer evocative views of the medieval urban settlement.

The construction of the Church, by will of the Monaldeschi della Cervara and dedicated to the birth of the Virgin, dates back to the beginning of the 13th century when they assigned it to the Friars Minor Conventual of St. Francis. Its structure has a single nave and on the north side it has a raised apse. The ceiling has a roof with the technique of exposed truss. The church has undergone various transformations over the centuries, the most important of which date back to the 18th century when the original Gothic appearance was altered by the new Baroque style. Of particular interest are: the frescoes in the nave attributed to Romanelli; those in the apse attributed to Davanzarano; a crucifixion with two saints from the 16th century near the exit and at the bottom of the right wall a fresco depicting St. Anthony with scenes of miracles of the Saint; on the opposite wall, the tomb of the Monaldeschi della Cervara.
