one of the many hills along the military road

I'd been dreaming of being there for a long time, and I finally made it. It's a simply wonderful place. Words needn't be written. I climbed to the pass on its eastern slope, the one that starts from Pian dell'Alpe, and previously climbed Colle delle Finestre from Susa. Combining the two sections, I can assure you it's one of the toughest climbs I've ever done, but also one of the most beautiful. The section from Pian dell'Alpe to Colle della Assietta is divided into three parts: the first 4 kilometers of a steady climb at 6-7% gradient, the 2-kilometer intermediate rest stop, and the final 4 kilometers with steeper gradients and a worse track condition. I wholeheartedly invite you all to enjoy this wonderful place.

This hill can be reached from Colle delle Finestre via the old military road. The last stretch is on a trail to bypass the road closure due to construction (July 2025).

⚠️Be careful of the mandatory portage section to skip the collapsed point, the only passage if you want to continue and reach the Mezzodì and its unforgettable view 🤩

A hill that goes up a forest road, sometimes rocky, goes up through the heart of the Great Forest in the Parco Naturale della Gran Bosco di Salbertrand (Natural Park of the Great Forest of Salbertrand) to the Col Blegier (pass). Because it is a forest road, the trail is not technically difficult, but there is 640 m (2,100 ft) of climbing in this 7.7 km

The mountain passes in this region, particularly the Strada dell'Assietta, hold significant historical importance. Built in the late 1800s for military purposes, the area was also the site of the pivotal Battle of Assietta in 1747 during the War of the Austrian Succession. This event is commemorated annually on July 19th.
Yes, along the Strada dell'Assietta, you can still see remnants of fortifications such as the Gran Serin Battery and Gran Mouttas Battery, which are visible along the route, offering a glimpse into the area's military past.
The mountain passes, especially along the Strada dell'Assietta, offer spectacular viewpoints. Its ridge-top location provides expansive vistas of the surrounding Alps, the Susa Valley to the north, and the Chisone Valley to the south. Colle dell'Assietta itself provides views of the surrounding Alps and access to the Orsiera Rocciavrè natural park.
The mountain passes are a popular destination for a variety of outdoor activities. The Strada dell'Assietta is particularly favored by mountain bikers, hikers, and touring motorbikes due to its challenging dirt and rock surface. You can find many routes for these activities, including MTB Trails around Gravere, Road Cycling Routes around Gravere, and Running Trails around Gravere.
The mountain passes are generally accessible from June 1st to October 31st, weather permitting. This period offers the best conditions for exploring the high-altitude routes and enjoying outdoor activities.
Yes, to preserve the experience and minimize dust, motorized vehicle access on certain sections of the Strada dell'Assietta between Col Basset and Pian dell'Alpe is restricted on Wednesdays and Saturdays in July and August, from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM.
Yes, the Assietta Refuge (also known as Rifugio Casa Assietta) provides a welcome stop along the Strada dell'Assietta. It is noted as the sole establishment providing food and drink on the route, offering refreshments like espresso and cake.
While many passes are challenging, some sections or nearby areas offer more accessible options. For instance, Blegier Pass is categorized as family-friendly and offers views and access to trails. When planning, look for trails marked as 'intermediate' or 'family_friendly' in the highlight descriptions.
Visitors frequently praise the spectacular views and the unique blend of natural beauty, historical immersion, and outdoor challenge. Many consider the Strada dell'Assietta one of the most beautiful roads they've experienced, highlighting the 'magical visions' created by the high-alpine landscapes and the sense of accomplishment from traversing these historic routes.
While popular, the vastness of the region allows for exploration away from the main routes. To find less crowded options, consider visiting during off-peak times (outside of July and August, or on weekdays). Exploring trails like those leading to Colle della Vecchia, which might require a short portage, can offer a more secluded experience.
The Strada dell'Assietta traverses several high-altitude passes in addition to Colle dell'Assietta itself. These include Colle Blegier (2,381 m), Colle Costa Piana (2,313 m), Colle Bourget (2,299 m), Colle Lauson (2,490 m), and Col Basset (2,424 m). The highest point along the route is Testa dell'Assietta, reaching 2,550 meters.
