Tracciolino Trail

Highlight (Segment) • Trail

Sentiero del Tracciolino Calabria, Tracciolino Trail
In Calabria on the Tracciolino, the path overlooking the sea
Between the Tyrrhenian Sea and the last mountain areas of the Aspromonte National Park, the Tracciolino Trail crosses one of the most intact and suggestive stretches of the Calabrian coast. The trekking route runs through the colors and intense scents of the Mediterranean maquis and offers a spectacular panorama, to say the least: on the horizon the Aeolian Islands with the profile of Stromboli in the foreground, to the south-west the mighty silhouette of Mount Etna beyond the Strait of Messina and to the north the plain by Gioia Tauro, behind which stands the silhouette of Capo Vaticano.

Sant'Elia Church, Palmi

Highlight • Religious Site

Church of Sant'Elia, Palmi
The Church of Sant'Elia is a Catholic place of worship in Palmi. It is located on the top of the mountain of the same name. Inside are the two venerated statues of Sant'Elia and Maria Santissima della Montagna.
In 884, a place of worship with an adjacent monastery of Basilian monks was founded on the top of Mount Salinas by the monk Elias of Enna. The latter, who later became a saint, lived in the monastery for most of his life. St. Filaret also stayed in the same monastery and was buried after his death.
The abbey was rebuilt in the eleventh century by some Basilian monks who dedicated it to Saint Elias the Younger and which also housed the remains of the Sicilian saint. Roger II of Sicily subdued the place of worship in 1134 to the Archimandrite of the Monastery of the Redeemer of Messina.
In 1959 the current church was rebuilt by local workers, and a few years later there was the adaptation of the church to the liturgical reform after the Second Vatican Council, with the insertion of a marble table on the presbytery.
In 1979 the church and the whole city of Palmi passed from the jurisdiction of the Diocese of Miletus to the new one of Oppido Mamertina-Palmi.
In 2015 the church was completely restored internally and externally.

An idea born in the Somme,r at the initiative of the municipal administration to give a touch of color and one of the to give even more impression to the oldest and most characteristic places in the country: the Baglio district. In July 2020, dozens of colored umbrellas were hung on one of the stairs leading to the district, while the steps were decorated with writing of the same color reading “Nicotera nel cuore” in different languages. The alley immediately became a real attraction, as local residents and tourists were willing to take photos and selfies, which then made the place a symbol of Nicotera on social media.

Nicotera's Historic Alleys and Archways

Highlight • Historical Site

Nicotera, one of the most beautiful villages in Italy. To appreciate its charm, you have to start from the top and go down, to get lost in the streets of the oldest neighborhoods where you can breathe history. Getting lost to find the ancient walls, the old access gates to the town and for the more enterprising, trying to get to the sea along the old Roman road perhaps coming across old finds, such as the braceria which served as a lighthouse for sailors who landed in the in the port that no longer exists today and of which there is no trace except in history books. The castle is the icing on the cake.

Truly suggestive view of the coast from this square where three enormous Crosses are erected. The whole thing is reminiscent, with the necessary differences in type and structure, of the view enjoyed from Christ the Redeemer in Rio de Janeiro. A pity about the enormous radiotelephone antennas that spoil it a bit

At the end of April 2026, there were no umbrellas set up here yet. Nevertheless, a beautiful alley.
