Mesocco Castle

Highlight • Castle

Castello di Mesocco
The ruins of the Castello di Mesocco are located at 752 m above sea level on a mighty rock south of the village of Mesocco in Misox in the canton of Graubünden in Switzerland. Mesocco is one of the largest castle complexes in Switzerland and was the aristocratic center of the valley from the beginning of the 13th century until 1526. At the foot of the castle hill stands the Romanesque church of Santa Maria del Castello, also first mentioned in 1219.
The complex consists of four main parts: the outer castle in the northeast, the main castle on the rocky plateau, the inner castle "Rocca" within the main castle and the church of San Carpoforo.

Evangelical Reformed Church, Innerferrera

Highlight • Religious Site

Evangelical Reformed Church, Innerferrera
The evangelical reformed church in Innerferrera was built around 1834 in its present form and is the only church in the valley that stands in the middle of the village. This new building was made possible thanks to a generous donation from the legacy of the Ausserferrerer citizen Peter Lamalta, who died in Chur in 1825. The result is a rectangular hall church, which is divided into a choir and a nave. During excavations in 1939, the foundations of a narrower and shorter predecessor church were discovered. Since the renovation in 1939/40, the church tower has had a dial, for which the bell windows were provided with wooden blinds.
In the choir there is a baptismal font and organ and an artfully constructed pulpit. On the back of the choir wall, under the lunette window, a Bible verse in Romansh is attached in an arched arrangement: “CUN FIDANZA LAINSA NUS VURDAR SIN JESUS, L’ANTSCHEATTA A LA FEGN DALLA CARDIENTSCHA. HEBR. 12.2. "The German translation of this verse from the Letter to the Hebrews reads:" We want to look to Jesus with trust, the beginner and finisher of faith. "

Mesocco Castle San Bernardino Castle Mesolcina Calanca The ruins of Mesocco Castle stand on top of an imposing rocky hill that rises steeply from the valley floor. This imposing fortress stands in the center of the valley, forcing the Moesa River into a wide bend in a narrow, impassable gorge, leaving only a narrow passage to the west. Mesocco Castle is protected on three sides by steep cliffs. Only to the northeast, on the upstream side of the valley, does the slope slope more gently. Climbing up the old access road to the castle from the north side, you first reach the Church of St. Maria del Castello and are already on the castle grounds, which were once surrounded by a defensive wall. The impressive ruins consist mainly of the remains of defensive works built in the last decades of the 15th century, i.e., during the final phase of the castle's life. Among them are numerous ruins from earlier eras, so that the castle's current appearance reveals its eventful history, which has its roots in the early Middle Ages. Beautiful Alpine pass that, thanks to the presence of a highway, remains relatively free of traffic compared to others. It separates the Adula Alps to the west from the Tambo group to the east.

Mesocco itself is one of the largest castle complexes in Switzerland. In addition to various ruins located on the slopes outside the town, there are excellent intact remains of the castle and the Romanesque church of Santa Maria. It's worth a visit slowly.
