December 21, 2025, Chiesetta dei Santi Pietro e Paolo a Centa di Prepotto

Historian Tarcisio Venuti dates its construction to around the 14th-15th century, although the first documentary mention of it dates back to 1533. The building underwent a radical transformation after the earthquakes of 1511 and 1513, inspired by the Slovenian style of the Škofija Loka school, like many other small churches in the area, but with a style unparalleled for the beauty of the statuettes, placed in the keystones and lateral lunettes, with figurative corbels supported by elegant columns. It was further restored in the 18th century; in 1777, Francesco Colussi created the altarpiece with the Nativity in the center and Saints Peter and Paul on the sides. The 17th-century wooden altar has an altarpiece depicting the Virgin Enthroned with Child; At the base, in an oval, is the Adoration of the Magi, painted by Girolamo Ridolfi da Cividale in 1585. The finish site of the nineteenth stage of the 2022 Giro d'Italia, won by Koen Bouwman, the Castelmonte Sanctuary (Stara Gora in Slovenian, meaning "ancient mountain") is located in the village of the same name in the municipality of Prepotto. Dedicated to the Blessed Virgin, the sanctuary was consecrated in 1744 and is of great importance to Slovenian literature: in the 1490s, the so-called Castelmonte Manuscript (Starogorski rokopis in Slovenian) was written here, one of the oldest surviving documents written in the Slovenian language.

"The sanctuary of the Beata Vergine di Castelmonte (Madone di Mont in Friulian, Stara Gora or" ancient mountain "in Slovenian) is located in Castelmonte, a hamlet of Prepotto (UD). It rises 618 m close to the Julian Alps, 7 km from Cividale del Friuli. Its origins lie in primitive Christianity. According to a reliable tradition, the place where the sanctuary stands, due to its dominant position between the Natisone and Judrio valleys, was the seat of a Roman garrison in defense of the city of Forum Iulii (today Cividale del Friuli) from the barbarian invasions started in the 5th century. It is assumed that, at first, the sacred place consisted of a small chapel carved into the rock and dedicated to the Madonna and to St. Michael the Archangel. The site of Castelmonte was also used by the local population as a refuge on the occasion of the invasions (Huns, Goths, Lombards, Avars and Slavs). The locality, over time, and also due to the increasing devotion to the Virgin Mary of the community of nearby Aquileia, grew to become a fortified village that surrounded the chapel, with perspective walls, stairways and various stone buildings.
