The Augustinian Canons' Collegiate Church was first documented in 1102 and elevated to the Prince-Provostry of Berchtesgaden in the 16th century. After secularization, the monastery building became the hunting and summer residence of the Wittelsbachs, while the collegiate church was used by the parish as its main church. The History of the Berchtesgaden Collegiate Church Old travel reports state: … "the area extends more in height than in width …". Apart from the valley plain leading from Salzburg to Berchtesgaden, the municipality is surrounded by the Berchtesgaden Alps at various altitudes. The former Augustinian monastery with its house of God also towers prominently into the sky. From afar, the early Gothic choir with its high, narrow windows can be seen in the east. The adjoining lower nave extends westward to the double-tower facade. Towers and facade repeatedly fell victim to lightning strikes and fires. Today, the viewer is faced with a Neo-Romanesque facade from the 19th century. The monastery was founded around 1116/19. It was built on the site where research suspects a small wooden church or chapel existed even before the 10th century. In the first half of the 12th century, the minster was erected as an emergency structure by Provost Eberwin. According to an inscription from 1122, the Archbishop of Salzburg, Konrad, is said to have consecrated a first construction phase. In the second half of the 12th century, a three-aisled Romanesque pillar basilica and probably the first towers were built. As part of the collegiate monastery, the church was expanded in the mid-13th century with a cloister, a porch, and two towers. Around the turn of the 13th to the 14th century, Gothic additions began in the following centuries with Provost Johann Sax von Saxenau and the design of a new choir in the early Gothic style. Since 1803, it has served as the parish church of the Roman Catholic parish of St. Andreas. Source: https://www.berchtesgaden.de/pois/stiftskirche-berchtesgaden

Built from the beginning of the 12th century, it was used until secularization as the collegiate church of the Augustinian canons within the shortly before founded monastery of Berchtesgaden (from 1559 Prince-Provostry). Since 1803, it has served as the parish church for the Roman Catholic parish of St. Andreas in Berchtesgaden, which belongs to the Archdiocese of Munich and Freising in Bavaria.

The parish church of St. Andreas is, strictly speaking, the former parish church of Berchtesgaden. Because with secularization, the parish rights passed to the collegiate church of St. Peter and John. Nevertheless, a magnificent building worth seeing with artistic furnishings!

A really nice place for a break on the tour. We stopped after about 15 kilometers for a short lunch snack and went back again on the way back – this time for coffee and carrot cake. Both were super delicious, the atmosphere totally pleasant, and the stop was absolutely worth it every time. Definitely worth a stop – or even two 😜
