The Reuss is an important river in Switzerland, which originates in the canton of Uri and flows through Lake Uri, bringing fresh water into Lake Uri and is part of the river system that further drains into the Rhine via the Aare.

Absolute must - the road winds spectacularly along the rock. Great to drive. Part of it (approx. 5 km) is closed and is supplemented by a shuttle bus. The Swiss are just cautious...

Winkelbrunnen, Winkelplatz, Altdorf from 1989 The abundance of springs in the Gruonberg was one of the most important prerequisites for the creation and development of Altdorf. Long before the 16th century, some of these springs were captured and the water channeled into ditches and channels. Wooden pipes (Tüchel) led the water to the lower Winkel and to the market, where it filled simple wooden fountains. Since 1544 at the latest, Altdorf also had private fountain lines with their own spring catchment. Up until 1888, Altdorf had no general water supply. This meant that the water required for households had to be fetched from one of the public fountains unless one had one's own private fountain. The new water supply was put into operation in 1888. To mark the 100th anniversary of the Altdorf water supply, a new fountain was built on Winkelplatz in 1988, the design of which clearly stands out from the historic fountains. The fountain at Winkel was built in connection with the renovation of Winkel in 1989. The design was created by the architectural firm German & Achermann. The fountain was a gift from the municipality of Altdorf to the Altdorf water supply company.
