In Wallhausen, at the local castle, lived Bernd v.d. Asseburg. His father, also named Bernd, had sold three forest districts, the Hoyerberg, Bartenberg, and Siebenthal, to three charcoal burners from the Mansfeld region for logging. However, he had stated the area of these three tracts of woodland much too high, and consequently, as the buyers believed his statement, he received too much payment. Shortly thereafter, the elder Bernd died, and his son took over the estates of Falkenstein, Wallhausen, Beyernaumburg, and the manor in Sangerhausen. In the meantime, the charcoal burners had had their tracts measured, and as it turned out that their area had been stated too high, the buyers sued the young Bernd von der Asseburg for the return of the overpaid purchase money. He, however, who had hired a shrewd administrator, won the lawsuit and swore off the claim. From that time on, he had no more peace in his castles and, to atone for his guilt, undertook a journey to his Holy Sepulchre. He stayed there for a few years and then returned as a pious man, intending to withdraw completely from the world's hustle and bustle to his manor in Sangerhausen. In Jerusalem, in devout worship, he had walked barefoot and bareheaded on several occasions along the path that Christ had had to tread with the cross to Golgotha, and there he resolved to establish two prayer stations in his homeland at an equal distance. He returned to Sangerhausen with the exact measurement of their distance. However, as he was uncertain whether he had not erred after all, he sent two pious brothers to Jerusalem once more to have the distance verified by them. Only when they confirmed his measurements upon their return did he have the two prayer columns erected to mark the route that Christ had had to carry his cross to Golgotha, and thereafter he walked this path every day. Whereas Bernd v.d. Asseburg had previously been a harsh, stingy lord who chased the poor away from his courtyard with whips and dogs, he now became a pious man and a friend to the poor, to whom he did much good.

Along the Kyffhäuser Radweg cycle path, you almost always have a super brilliant view of the Kyffhäuser. The only shame is that you have very limited options to ride on it (either via hiking trails or via the road).

Exhibition in an extraordinary building. At the center is, of course, the discovery of the Nebra sky disk and its connections. You should plan 1-2 hours for the exhibition and the film in the planetarium. Those who can't take any more should refresh themselves in the café. There are drinks, small meals, and cakes. Admission (as of 04/26) Adults €9.50. A look into the UFO or the find spot of the Nebra sky disk with an observation tower about 3 kilometers away is also recommended.
