Villa Olmo

Highlight • Historical Site

Como - Villa dell'Olmo
The name of the villa goes back to a huge elm tree (Olmo), which according to legend was planted by Pliny the Younger and once adorned the villa's park. The original plans for the villa in neoclassical style (today the central building) are by Simone Cantoni from Muggio in the canton of Ticino, designed in the late 18th century. The first owner is Innocenzo Odescalchi, and subsequent owners expanded the building by adding wings, without however distorting the villa's stylistic appearance. Famous guests include Napoleon and Garibaldi. Today the villa belongs to the municipality of Como, which has used it for cultural events since its restoration.

The main facade faces Lake Como and consists of the central building (i.e., the original villa) - which is rhythmically divided by columns and optical facade divisions, pilasters, and is topped by a roof terrace with statues - as well as the two side wings.

The clearly structured exterior transforms into a magnificent interior: here there is an abundance of stucco, gold decorations, and frescoes by artists from the late 17th and early 18th centuries. Among all the rooms, the Teatrino, a small theatre with 92 seats (1853), stands out particularly, with its decorative charm and frescoes by Fontana.

In the park, there is a small neoclassical temple and a small stream flows. In the center of the garden - opposite the villa - there is a fountain depicting two children playing with a sea monster; a work by the sculptor G. Odofrechi. The attic is dedicated to an exhibition of the architect Antonio Sant'Elia (1886-1916), the first proponent of futuristic architecture.

Baradello Castle

Highlight • Castle

Castle ruins of Castello Baradello. Once a large castle complex, there is now a tower and a few remains of the wall. There are some display boards with explanations, unfortunately only in Italian, no English translation. Apparently the castle should be open Saturday and Sunday, there are guided tours, but possibly only in summer. Unfortunately it was closed with us.

At the end of the beach promenade there is "suddenly" a huge building: Villa Olmo. Imposing park with a panoramic view of Como. The bike has to be pushed.

Very characteristic castle of the place. If I'm not mistaken, the market and various events are held in the square opposite.

Villa Olmo is a perfect example of Italian neoclassical style. Its elegance and charm didn’t go unnoticed by Napoleon Bonaparte and Giuseppe Garibaldi, who were two of the most notable guests of the villa. The villa began restoration work in early 2024, so its interior will not be open to visitors for about a couple of years. The gardens that surround it are open all throughout the year.
