The first evidence of a castle at this site dates back to the year 845. In the 12th century, the castle belonged to the Lords of Pergine, changed hands several times, and passed to the Habsburgs under Margaret of Tyrol. In 1531, they gifted the castle to the Bishop of Trent, Bernhard von Cles. The castle belonged to the Diocese of Trent until 1905, which leased it to its governors for use (Firmian, Madruzzo, Wolkenstein, the last governor was Antonio Giuseppe Girardi). From 1805, it was leased to farming families until 1905. During this time, the castle fell into disrepair more and more. In March 1905, it was acquired by a joint-stock company initiated by the völkisch-antisemitic Munich publisher Julius Friedrich Lehmann, which began to restore the complex and established a hotel and restaurant in the castle, opened in 1906 by the historian and later Christian Social Federal Chancellor Michael Mayr, a leading member of the German nationalist Tiroler Volksbund. The work had to be interrupted in 1913. In 1920, the municipality of Pergine acquired the castle, but in 1956 was forced to sell it again to Mario Oss, a Swiss national from Pergine. The Oss family had Castel Pergine renovated and set up a hotel and restaurant there. During the summer months, the castle was also used as an exhibition space for art exhibitions. After it became known in 2017 that the castle was for sale and the municipality of Pergine was unable to purchase the complex, private individuals founded a committee and subsequently a non-profit foundation with the aim of acquiring the castle. At the end of 2018, Castel Pergine was transferred to this non-profit foundation, supported by over 800 individuals and about 50 institutions and associations. Source Wikipedia

The medieval castle now operates as a hotel and restaurant. You can even drive up to the castle, but the view from there is also impressive.

Spectacular building also known as the Castle of Trento, located in the centre of the city and currently adapted and converted into a historical museum. It was the residence of the prince-bishops and has its origins - visible today - in the large tower built in the 13th century. In 1475 it was renovated in the Gothic style of the time, which can be seen in some details of the rooms. There are also the cells of the soldiers who were prisoners of the First World War and who were shot in the castle moat, although these are not open to the public.
